Ah . . the good old days when games were games not fmv clips Having been introduced to gaming via the video arcades via the Spectrum, I'm amazed that people have the cheek to call some of the modern dross "games". To me, a game is something you get straight into, sit at for an hour or two and then turn the bloody thing off when you've managed a decent high score or reached a particularly difficult level.
These days you have to wade through endless intros and fmv sequences and THEN they expect you to invest 26 weeks playing some stoopid kids RPG with sub-Rupert the Bear dialog and graphic that looked crap on the SNES. Or some bland WWII FPS that looks the same as the 55 others you've played this year.
I remember in the days of the good old Speccy, C64 and Amiga, every new release was an event that brought something new to the table. Okay they may have all been arcadey and unsophisticated compared to the multi-million dollar "epics" of today but, somehow they were just more fun and more instantly playable.
Of course, you could argue that we've gone full circle with the advent and resurgence of retro on XBOX 360 live marketplace but, no matter how well you dress it up, you can't recreate the feeling of having been there at the time.
Naturally, all the naysayers who have invested big bucks in the current gen will accuse us retrofans of looking at the gaming world through rose-coloured specs but I, for one, wouldn't trade my retro memories for a PS3 six-axis controller or a Wii nunchuck.
Gimmicks fade while quality endures . . .Halo 3 my arse . . .

I like my retro gubbins, I really do. I also have a PS3 and 360.
I'm open to all gaming experiences.

Youre not wrong dude - theres too many fmv these days - all a game needs is intro fmv, not fmv every bloody 5 seconds!!! Probably one of the reason why so many of us like the good old retro stylee :)

Oh yeah . . .I've got a PS2, 360 and others - I'm not knocking 'em. Play a lot of racers on 360 f'rinstance.
My rant was aimed at the modern style of packing DVDs out with everything but the game.
Example . . .Serious Sam on the XBox is 2 point odd gig but the game is about 300 meg.
What's going on there . . . :? :?:

I must say, in the olden days many more new releases (SNES, Amiga etc.) excited me. Today there are more games released and I'm just not that interested.
I will be buying Halo 3 though.

I wont!!I will?
subzero1970- 08-21-2007
You were supposed to ask me why!
gundarN- 08-21-2007
Is it because it is unimaginative modern pap that has been seen a million times before?
subzero1970- 08-21-2007
No, its coz i dont own an xbox 360!!!!
gundarN- 08-21-2007
So, if someone gave you a 360 as a present (not me, I hasten to add), would you consider Halo 3? Me and my dad enjoy playing Call of Duty 3 online (and he's 59) and I think the online component of Halo may be good (or it could be shittola, who knows?).
While I'm here, my dads favorite games have been:
Goldeneye (the game that really got him hooked)
Halo
Halo2
Secret Weapons over Normandy
Blazing Angels
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 3
He's a simple thing really...

I agree with shadows opening comments. Gaming has become too corporate and there is little room for new inventiveness. I also try to find a few thrills in the new stuff, but find more satisfaction from short sessions with the pre-playstation era games. Too many FPS games are relying on eye candy and FMV to placate vapid imaginations.

A lot of games now need a PHD Degree to operate.
One game that comes to mind that was quick to get a hold of and had a lot of depth believe it or not was Spyro the Dragon on the PSX any version of it was good.
