The current gen vs retro debate
All this buzz around Halo 3 and Bioshock on the 360 is obviously good for games in general, but it got me thinking about style over substance or -more specifically - flashy vs retro. I mean . . .both games are, what ?? Forty quid online, apparently immersive and - allegedly - state of the art. But do I give a shit ?? No . . .because I just played a great little shareware game called Peggle. Simple but functional graphics, gameplay between Breakout and Pachinko, fairly simple arcadey controls and reasonably straightforward tasks to accomplish . . .oh, and very cheap. More importantly . . .as addictive as fuck. Would I get any more pleasure out of playing Halo 3 ?? Doubt it. Would the wide open spaces of Bioshock provide me any more fun than the claustophobic confines of Peggle ?? Unlikely. Bottom line . . .I honestly believe that Peggle will give me more enjoyment than the other two. Conclusion . . .retro is King :!:

Ahhh, but Halo 3 is a great game and I recon in 15 years time I will dig out my old 360 slap in Halo 3 for some single player action (as XBOX Live will probably no longer exist or support Halo 3) and think to myself: They don't make them like they used to. Someone else may sit down for a game of Peggle at the same time and think the same thing too. A good game is a good game regardless.

Agreed. Flashy graphics do not make the gameplay any better.

I'm not suggesting that Halo 3 or Bioshock are poor games . . .I've played neither of them. The point I'm making is that - for me - addictive shareware games are just as much fun whilst being a lot cheaper . . . :D

You can't put a price on entertainment. Well, you can; but it would have to be awfully expensive to put me off.
